Botox® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved treatment that temporarily reduces signs of aging like moderate to severe frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes. The treatment produces consistent results and is quite safe.

How Do Wrinkles Form?
Repetitive facial movements can cause certain wrinkles to appear on the skin. Every time you form the same facial expressions and perform the same actions (like chewing or laughing), it becomes harder for your facial muscles to relax back to an at-rest position. This leads to visible wrinkles in the overlying skin. These age lines are called dynamic wrinkles and can make you look old and tired.
What Is Botox® Cosmetic?
The story began in 1989 when the FDA approved the use of OnabotulinumtoxinA for therapeutic purposes. Due to its safety in treating frown lines, in 2002, it was approved for use in the aesthetic field and was named Botox®. Since then, Botox® Cosmetic has been used in more than 98 countries and has been recognized as a trusted brand.
Botox® Cosmetic is the treatment of choice for dynamic wrinkles. It has become the most popular and safe, non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed today. This therapy involves injecting small amounts of the purified protein into the facial muscles responsible for movement associated with lines and wrinkles primarily in the upper face. This injection relaxes the muscle, thus drastically reducing the appearance of the associated lines and wrinkles.
The Botox Consultation
The Botox® Cosmetic treatment starts with a consultation with Dr. Rivela. He will conduct a physical examination, along with reviewing your present health condition, medications, and allergies, in order to determine whether you are a suitable candidate.
You are not a suitable candidate if:
- You are allergic to ingredients in Botox® Cosmetic.
- You have a skin infection or an injury in the treatment area.
- You have had certain other facial rejuvenation treatments done recently.
- You have had an allergic reaction to other botulinum toxin products like Dysport and Xeomin.
- You have a severe muscle or nerve condition that can increase the side effects associated with the treatment.
- You have an underlying condition that can alter the results of this treatment.
- You are pregnant, lactating, breastfeeding, or planning to be pregnant soon.
If you are a good candidate, a treatment plan will be created. This will include the intended injection sites, the number of injections, and the amount of Botox® to be used.
The Botox Procedure
During the procedure, the treatment area is cleaned with a disinfectant, and the injection sites are marked. The treatment areas may be numbed using a topical cream or ice to reduce any discomfort, though the treatment is mostly painless. An ultra-fine needle is used to inject Botox® directly into the facial muscles. Ice and pressure are then applied.

I find it sad that the woman who are unhappy with Dr. Rivela were ones who were all ready unhappy with their body. In my case I needed a breast reduction due to back pain, neck pain etc. I was a 34H at the age of 21 and Dr.Rivela got me to a nice C cup in under three hours. my surgery was 3 days ago at Memorial Hermanns Outpatient center and I am feeling fantastic! He was very kind and even took into consideration the “dream bra” I brought in with me to my consult. I also took it with me on surgery day just to make sure we were on the same page and I couldn’t be more happier with the size he left me with. He removed a total of 1,100g. His staff is very caring, and I have not experience any staff ignoring me to be on facebook when I am in the office, like someone else mentioned. I am very very pleased with my decision to use Dr. Rivela for my breast reduction, I would do it all over again with no regrets! I would much rather have a amazing plastic surgeon with okay “bed side” manners than a PS who has amazing bed-side manners and okay work. For the patients who aren’t happy with their botox injections, or neck lifts you weren’t happy to begin with so its really hard to meet your perfect standard, I had a wonderful experience and would use Dr. Rivela again.

After Botox Treatment
After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expressions to be unaffected. No sedation is needed, and you can resume normal activities immediately. Results typically last for 3-4 months.
Areas of Botox Treatment
The most common areas that Botox® Cosmetic is used are the lines between the eyes, forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and, on occasion, around the mouth. This product can also be used for controlling excessive sweating of the underarms.
This FDA-approved, purified protein has been in use for over 20 years in medical practice in the field of ophthalmology for the treatment of several muscular eye disorders including blepharospasm and strabismus. In addition, neurologists have more recently utilized Botox® in the treatment of certain types of headaches. The cosmetic use of this product began in the early 1990s with specific use for wrinkle treatment of the upper face.
