As we age, our skin slowly loses collagen and elastin stores, resulting in common signs of aging. One area that tends to show aging first is the thin and delicate under-eye area. Many patients are bothered by dark circles, puffiness, and uneven skin texture and tone in this area. If you are seeking a natural solution for a rejuvenated appearance, platelet-rich fibrin for under the eyes may be right for you.

What is PRF for Under the Eyes?

Platelet-rich fibrin, or PRF, is a natural injectable treatment to rejuvenate the skin. PRF consists of a platelet-rich fibrin matrix, a molecular structure that contains leukocytes, platelets, cytokines, and stem cells. It acts as a delivery system of cells and growth factors, boosting skin health. Unlike other filler options that contain synthetic ingredients, PRF uses the patient’s own blood to improve skin texture, boost hyaluronic acid production, and increase collagen production for noticeable anti-aging effects. At Rivela Plastic Surgery, we are proud to offer PRF to treat the under-eye area to address pigmentation, skin texture, and loss of volume.

The Difference Between PRF and PRP

While they may have similar-sounding names, Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments are not the same. While both require blood to be drawn from the body and separated using a centrifuge, PRF contains a higher platelet concentration. In fact, platelet-rich fibrin contains approximately 10 times the platelet concentration found within the body, while platelet-rich plasma contains roughly 2-5 times the platelet concentration. PRF has also been professionally referred to as a second-generation platelet concentrate, offering many advantages over rationally prepared PRP.

In addition, platelet-rich plasma involves the use of anticoagulants, which prevent the blood from clotting during injection, while this is not true for platelet-rich fibrin treatments. This allows PRF to create growth factors slowly over time for longer-lasting results.

Who is a Candidate for PRF for Under the Eyes?

Individuals who are bothered by dark circles, under-eye puffiness, uneven skin tone, and texture can often benefit from PRF treatments. This treatment option is safe for people of all skin types and tones. Individuals who are seeking a more natural alternative to fillers often choose PRF.

However, this treatment may not be for everyone. Those taking blood thinners, having a blood clotting disease, collagen vascular disease, disorders affecting their immune system, or active infection should not receive this PRF treatment.

How Does PRF Work?

PRF is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis. To begin a platelet-rich fibrin treatment, the patient’s blood will be drawn. This blood will then be run through a machine called a centrifuge (without added anticoagulants) to separate the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) from the red blood cells and other blood components. The PRF is then collected from this sample and placed into a small syringe. The PRF will then be skillfully injected into the under-eye area to address unwanted signs of aging. The PRF will begin repairing collagen and elastin, vital growth factors for boosting tissue healing and regeneration.

PRF Downtime and Recovery

Following PRF treatment, you may experience mild swelling or bruising at the injection site. Under-eye fullness may occur for 3-5 days after injection, which will resolve with time. Most patients can begin to notice improvements after 1-2 months as the healing properties and soft tissue regeneration of the PRF begin to work.

PRF treatments can work wonderfully for treating aging under the eyes. The number of treatments required will vary depending on the individual patient and their aesthetic goals. Many patients need 3-5 sessions to achieve desired results.

Results from a PRF treatment typically last 6-12 months. Maintenance treatments are encouraged to maintain results.
