Spider veins are small, visible blood vessels that can appear on the legs, ankles, or even the face, often causing cosmetic concerns and, in some cases, discomfort. While not usually a serious medical issue, spider veins can make patients feel self-conscious about their appearance or limit clothing choices. Fortunately, advanced vein treatments are available that are safe, effective, and designed to restore smoother, clearer skin with minimal downtime.

At Rivela Plastic Surgery, we are proud to offer an array of spider vein treatment options, including sclerotherapy and laser vein treatment.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Unwanted varicose and spider veins can be treated with minimal discomfort in as little as 15 to 45 minutes using sclerotherapy treatment. This proven method involves injecting a sclerosing solution into the area to be treated using a fine needle, causing the target vein to collapse and gradually dissolve as the body naturally absorbs it. Sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard for the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins, especially for larger surface veins and feeder veins that lasers cannot always address.

Before beginning treatment, your provider will carefully review your medical history to ensure you are a good candidate and minimize potential side effects, such as temporary bruising, redness, or mild irritation at the injection site. The procedure is non-invasive, typically takes about 10 minutes, and requires little to no downtime.

To maximize results, patients are instructed to wear compression stockings or bandages for 72 hours to one week following treatment. This improves healing and lowers the risk of complications, such as a blood clot. Most patients require two or more sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal clearance of varicose or spider veins.

Laser Spider Vein Treatment

For some patients, laser therapy may be recommended as an alternative or complement to sclerotherapy. A high-powered 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser is often used for treating smaller veins on the face or legs. Each treatment takes 15–45 minutes with minimal discomfort. Following laser treatment, it is essential to avoid sun exposure for 2–3 weeks to protect the treated skin.

Benefits of Spider Vein Treatment

Patients who choose spider vein treatment often enjoy both cosmetic and functional benefits, including:

  • Improved appearance: Clearer, smoother skin without distracting veins.
  • Boosted confidence: Freedom to wear shorts, skirts, or swimsuits with confidence.
  • Minimal downtime: Treatments are quick, with most patients returning to daily activities right away.
  • Long-lasting results: With proper care, treated veins fade and do not return.
  • Better leg comfort: Some patients experience reduced aching or heaviness in their legs after treatment.

What to Expect

Your treatment plan begins with a consultation to determine which method —sclerotherapy, laser, or a combination —best suits your needs. During the procedure, you may feel a mild pinch or warmth at the injection site or treated vein, but discomfort is generally minimal. Afterward, you can walk immediately and resume most normal activities, though you will be advised to wear compression stockings for a short period to support healing.

Results develop gradually, as smaller veins often disappear in just a few weeks, while larger ones may take up to three months. To maintain your results, your provider may recommend lifestyle adjustments such as regular exercise, elevating your legs when possible, and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing.

What Results to Expect with Spider Vein Treatment

Most patients notice improvement within 2–4 weeks for small veins, while larger veins may take up to 3 months to fade. To help prevent new veins from forming, daily exercise such as walking, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing, and limiting time spent in high heels are all recommended.
