What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia surgery (Male Breast Reduction) is a popular procedure for men with abnormal development of mammary glands resulting in breast enlargement. Dr. Rivela has performed many gynecomastia surgical procedures to remove excess breast tissue.
What causes gynecomastia? It can be the result of heredity, disease, issues with the adrenal gland or pituitary gland, use of certain drugs like anabolic steroids or prostate cancer treatment, or hormonal imbalances/hormone changes. It is not linked to breast cancer. It is common in men of all ages and can be detrimental to self-confidence and often causes emotional distress. Many men with this condition avoid certain physical activities that require removing their shirts and often find physical intimacy to be a problem. Gynecomastia may be present in either one or both of the breasts.

Characteristics of Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) are:
- An excess of localized fat
- An excess of glandular tissue development
- A combination of localized fat and glandular breast tissue development and excess skin

While this increase is something to be continually studied, it also means that if you’re struggling with gynecomastia and looking for male breast reduction, you’re not alone. Many men are right there with you.
