Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Reduction of enlarged breast on men.

Location of operation: Hospital or Surgery Center

Procedure:

Male breast reduction is performed on an out patient basis using a general anesthesia.  The procedure can last from one to three hours depending on the extent of correction.

If your gynecomastia is primarily caused by fatty tissue, liposuction is usually the procedure of choice.  Liposuction surgery is a procedure used to actually remove unwanted localized deposits of fact cells from the body.  The result is a resculpting of bulging breasts into more attractive contours.

If your gynecomastia is the result of a glandular disorder, liposcution alone is not likely adequate.  Traditional surgical excision may be a better option.  The excision may be perfomed alone or in conjunction with liposuction.

Your discomfort level after surgery may be moderate to severe and you should anticipate 5-14 days of prescription pain medication.  You will need to wear a support garment for a couple of weeks.  Bandages will be removed in 1-7 days, swelling and bruising should begin improving in two weeks.  If drains are placed, they will be removed in 3-5 days.  Driving may be resumed in two weeks if you have stopped taking prescription medication.  You may return to work in 3-7days.

Final results will be seen after the scars have matured, which would be in 6 months to a year.
